Transatlanticism (Song of the Day)

This song was in a movie I just watched last night, and today as
I looked out my window and saw the rain begin to fall, I thought
it was a beautiful song to play.
 Transatalnticism
n. The emotions and desire for intimacy, melancholy and hope while being
being in a long-distance relationship with another person over the Atlantic Ocean.
The Atlantic was born today and I'll tell you how
The clouds above opened up and let it out
I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere
When the water filled every hole
And thousands upon thousands made an ocean
Making islands where no island should go
Oh, no
Most people were overjoyed; they took to their boats
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat
The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your door
Have been silenced forevermore
The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row
It seems farther than ever before
Oh, no
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
I need you so much closer
So come on, come on...

That Kind of Love

Yesterday morning I was in Starbucks waiting for my cup of espresso
when I saw an elderly gentleman carrying a muffin and cup of coffee
over to a table where his lady was waiting. I watched them as
they sat there sharing a simple Sunday breakfast and it reminded me of the ending of a book I just finished.
"I once traveled by car with elderly friends going to a family event. The wife was suffering from Alzheimer's and every twenty seconds she would ask somewhat fearfully, "Where are we going?" Her husband would always respond gently and cheerfully, as if for the first time.
Years later, I heard from my grandparents about this couple and how the husband gallantly continued to care for his wife during her mental degeneration. By the time she died, she no longer recognized her husband of fifty years. But she did tell him, offhand, something very beautiful: "You know, I don't know who you are, but you're the best," she said.
Most of us, I think, are looking for that kind of love. It's the love that brings out the best in us and in others; it's the ennobling love that persists even when the brain cells are long gone.

Good Morning, Saturday

This morning I met a friend at a downtown cafe to talk, drink coffee and have breakfast...but that was just the beginning. We were there to take in the sights, smells and sounds of the Saturday morning farmer's market.
There were four blocks filled with vendors selling, pastries, fresh squeezed lemonade, flowers, wine, pottery, fruits, cheese and vegetables. There were old and young there...
I loved every moment I was there.

Listen to Your Heart (Friday Evening Movie)

I got Listen to Your Heart on a whim from the library. I had never heard of this movie before but for some reason I found myself wanting to bring it home. I thought it was a beautiful love story. It wasn't a flashy movie, but it did portray a love that doesn't walk out the door when life becomes painful. It highlighted being grateful for the big and small things, and that loving another person and being loved in return can turn out to be the most beautiful gift you can be given.
"A struggling New York City songwriter falls in love with a wealthy, hearing-impaired girl from Greenwich, Connecticut, who tragically cannot hear the music she inspires him to write. After the two fall in love, Ariana becomes torn between the wishes of her controlling mother and fighting for a love that, if given the chance, might just change her life.

The Game of Chess

This evening I was in the bookstore. I shifted through the books on the sales shelf and then browsed through the brand new hardbacks. As I was about to leave, I noticed two clusters of elderly men huddled together staring down at their tables. When I looked more closely I realized they were intensely playing the game of chess. I loved that they weren't talking, just contemplating their next move and the others were quiet spectators. It made me smile.
"Avoid the crowd. Do your own thinking independently. Be the chess player, not the chess piece."

Sunday (Heaven)

"The things that began to happen after that were so great and so beautiful that I cannot write them. And for us, this is the end of all the stories, and we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after. But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: Now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read; which goes on forever.
In which every chapter is better than the one before."
~C.S. Lewis The Last Battle (The Chronicles of Narnia)
"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying
and pain will be no more." Revelation 21:4

Indoor Picnic

Last night the ladies, I am a caregiver for, and I had a picnic...inside. We were going to have one outdoors but it began to sprinkle, so we picked some flowers, placed them on the table and then set up our fried chicken picnic dinner. My older lady kept saying "Oh, yes I like having picnics inside."

Skin & Ink

Tattoos...Some unique, some average,
some grotesque, some saddening and some...
beautiful.
I don't have any tattoos but I am drawn towards
the ones that tell a story; like remembering a loved one,
overcoming an addiction, celebrating the birth
of a child...When a person points to their
own tattoo and a story comes pouring out...
 I like that.
"A genuine tattoo.... tells a story.  I like stories. No matter how well done, if they don't tell a story that involves you emotionally, then they're just there for decoration, then they're not a valid tattoo.
~Leo, tattooist, 1993
"A tattoo is a true poetic creation, and is always more than meets the eye."
 ~V. Vale and Andrea Juno

"For someone who likes tattoos, the most precious thing is bare skin."

Dotted Lines (Song of the Day)

I just heard this song last night and I thought it was beautiful.
I've listened to it several times over.
Dotted Lines by Sweet Talk Radio
What is it, keeps me returning
To questions I ask
My paper heart has been burning

Since you threw a match
I can't quit a habit like you dear
Cold, as they say
Something about how you live here
I wanna live that way
But I don't wanna take something
That never was mine
Or fill in blank spaces
With more dotted lines
One thing I can promise
When all the smoke clears
Just look in this window
You'll find me here
I never was someone
Who knew what to say
I sank to the bottom
While you rode the waves
Why couldn't you teach me
If only you knew
How I longed for those words
How I longed for those words
But I don't wanna take something
That never was mine
Or fill in blank spaces
With more dotted lines
One thing I can promise
When all the smoke clears
Just look in this window
You'll find me here

Lost and then Found

Yesterday my Mom told me that 3 months ago she had lost her wedding ring. She looked everywhere but couldn't find it and thought it might have  slipped off her finger into the burn barrel where they burn their trash. The ashes had been too wet because of the rainy spring, that it wasn't until yesterday that my Dad was able to shift through three shovel's full of ashes and finally found it. Her voice was so happy when she told me that it hadn't been damaged and that it was so good to finally have it back.
Grow old with me!  The best is yet to be. ~Robert Browning

Rest

"Sometimes the most urgent thing you can possibly do is take a complete rest."
Ashleigh Brilliant

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time."
John Lubbock
"Rest when you're weary. Refresh and renew yourself, your body, your mind, your spirit. Then get back to work."
Ralph Marston
Last night I thought I was going to take a bath but as I began to draw the water I had the silliest thought go through my head, "I'm too tired to take a bath." So I turned the tap off, went to my room, crawled into bed, and fell asleep. It felt wonderful. Sometimes what my body needs more than a bath is simply rest.
